Labradorite Meaning, Spiritual Properties & Benefits

The stone of transformation — its magical colour-play, spiritual meaning & healing benefits

Labradorite is one of the most visually extraordinary gemstones in the world. A dark, seemingly unremarkable grey-green stone at first glance, it reveals — when tilted in the light — an iridescent flash of blues, greens, golds, violets and oranges that seems to come from deep within the stone. This phenomenon, called labradorescence, makes labradorite unlike any other gemstone. It also makes it a powerful symbol of hidden depths, transformation and magic.

What Is Labradorite

What Is Labradorite?

Labradorite is a feldspar mineral first discovered in Labrador, Canada in 1770 — which is how it got its name. It belongs to the plagioclase feldspar family and scores 6–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it suitable for necklaces, earrings, bracelets and occasional-wear rings. It is found in Canada, Madagascar, Finland and Australia, with the finest spectral-flash specimens coming from Madagascar.

The labradorescence effect is caused by light scattering between thin layers within the stone’s crystal structure — a phenomenon called thin-film interference. The colours produced depend on the thickness of the layers. No two labradorite stones look the same.

Labradorite Colour & Labradorescence

The base colour of labradorite is typically dark grey to grey-green, sometimes with a brownish tone. But the base colour is almost beside the point — what defines labradorite is its iridescent play of colour, called labradorescence. Depending on the stone, this flash can include:

  • Electric blue: the most common and prized colour, ranging from pale sky to deep cobalt
  • Teal and green: A cooler, oceanic flash common in Madagascan stones
  • Gold and yellow: Warm, fire-like flashes often seen alongside blue
  • Violet and purple: Rarer and particularly sought after
  • Orange and copper:  Uncommon, spectacular when present

Stones showing the full spectrum of colour (called spectrolite) are the most prized. The labradorescence only appears at certain angles — part of what makes labradorite so compelling to wear and to watch.

Labradorite Spiritual Meaning

The labradorite spiritual meaning is deeply connected to what the stone visually represents: hidden depths, inner magic and transformation. Its associations include:

Transformation & change:

Labradorite is known as the stone of transformation — it is used during times of major life change to support courage, clarity and trust in the process. Where rose quartz soothes, labradorite activates.

Intuition & psychic protection

Labradorite is strongly associated with the third-eye chakra. It is used to sharpen intuition, heighten awareness of synchronicities and protect the aura during spiritual work.

Revealing hidden truths

Just as labradorite hides its colour until tilted in the right light, its spiritual meaning speaks to the hidden aspects of ourselves and situations — the truths that only reveal themselves when we look from a different angle.

Magic & possibility

Indigenous Inuit people of Labrador believed the Northern Lights were trapped inside labradorite stones. This mythological connection to cosmic energy runs through virtually every cultural tradition that has worked with this stone.

Labradorite Benefits & Healing Properties

The labradorite benefits most recognised in crystal healing are energetic and protective:

How To Wear Labradorite Jewellery

How to Wear Labradorite Jewellery

Labradorite’s shifting colour makes it one of the most versatile stones in jewellery — it adapts to whatever you wear by reflecting different colours from your outfit and surroundings.

  • With black and dark navy: Against dark clothing, labradorite’s flashes of blue and teal are most visible and dramatic
  • With white and grey: A cooler, more minimalist pairing that lets the stone’s subtle magic speak for itself
  • With earth tones: Against olive, camel and brown, labradorite’s gold and green flashes come through beautifully
  • As a statement piece: Because no two labradorite stones are identical, each piece is inherently one-of-a-kind — making it an ideal conversation piece

Caring for Labradorite Jewellery

  • Clean with a soft, damp cloth or mild soapy water — avoid ultrasonic cleaners
  • Labradorite scores 6–6.5 on Mohs; remove before activities that risk impact or abrasion
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and prolonged sun exposure
  • Store separately from harder gemstones to prevent surface scratching

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the spiritual meaning of labradorite?

The labradorite spiritual meaning centres on transformation, intuition and protection. It is the stone of hidden magic — used during times of change to build courage and trust, and during spiritual practice to sharpen intuition and protect the aura from negative energy.

Labradorite benefits include aura protection, psychic development, stress reduction, mental clarity and overall energetic balance. It is one of the most protective crystals available and a favourite for anyone developing their intuition or going through a major life transition.

Labradorite has a dark grey-green base colour but displays an iridescent play of colour called labradorescence when tilted in the light. This can include blue, teal, green, gold, violet and orange. The blue flash is most common; violet and orange are rarest and most prized.

What chakra is labradorite?

Labradorite is primarily associated with the third-eye chakra (Ajna), supporting intuition, psychic awareness and clarity. It also resonates with the crown chakra and throat chakra, making it one of the few stones said to activate the full upper chakra system.

Labradorite is particularly associated with Scorpio, Sagittarius and Leo. It is worn by anyone going through transformation, seeking to develop their intuition, or needing protection from draining energy. It is an excellent stone for empaths, healers and creative people.
