Its bold, bright colour makes it one of the most distinctive gemstones in jewellery.Peridot is a variety of the mineral olivine and gets its characteristic green from the presence of iron — the more iron, the deeper and richer the green. The finest stones display an intense, saturated lime green with no brown overtones. Uniquely, peridot forms both deep within the Earth and in meteorites — making it one of only two gems (the other being diamond) known to form in the mantle rather than the crust. It scores 6.5–7 on the Mohs hardness scale.Peridot is the August birthstone and has been called the Gem of the Sun by ancient Egyptians, who believed it protected its wearer from night terrors.
