Filigree
What is filigree jewellery? Filigree is one of the world's oldest and most intricate jewellery-making techniques — delicate metalwork created by twisting and soldering fine wire into open lacework patterns. The result is jewellery that looks impossibly light and impossibly detailed: complex and airy at the same time, catching the light differently at every angle.
At Serendipity Jewelry, our filigree jewellery collection honours that ancient tradition through a distinctly Australian lens. Each piece is handcrafted in Sydney, with open metalwork patterns inspired by the native flora and iconic landscapes of Australia — the Waratah, Banksia, Uluru and the Tasman coast.
Gold filigree jewellery
Our gold filigree jewellery is made from gold filled metal — a thick layer of real 14k gold bonded permanently to the wire. Gold filled is the ideal material for filigree: it holds fine wire detail without compromising the integrity of the metalwork, and the warm gold tone brings out the dimensionality of the open lacework in a way that no other metal does. Our gold filigree jewellery includes rings, earrings and hand chain styles.
Sterling silver filigree jewellery
Sterling silver filigree has a crisp, bright quality that suits the fine wire work particularly well. Our silver filigree pieces are made from genuine .925 silver and show the open metalwork to its best advantage in cool, clear light.
The history of filigree jewellery
Filigree jewellery has been made for over 5,000 years — from ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, through Renaissance Italy and the Moorish craft traditions of the Iberian Peninsula, to the famous filigree schools of Malta and India. It appears wherever skilled metalworkers have had fine wire and patience. The technique is universal because the result is singular: nothing else in jewellery-making produces the same combination of visual complexity and physical lightness.
Caring for filigree jewellery
Filigree benefits from a little extra care. Avoid wearing during vigorous exercise or when applying perfume near the metal. To clean, use a very soft dry brush to gently remove dust from the open metalwork. Store individual pieces in a soft pouch to prevent fine wire from catching on other jewellery.
